Welcoming 2021

First let me say, I feel blessed to welcome 2021.  I was going to write a 2020 wrap up post, but what was I going to write about? Potential lost?  How I started the year off with a vision board that never materialized? How at the beginning of the national stay order, I had plans to write, stay in shape, eat better but instead I gained 30 plus pounds, the fear, the frustration?  *sigh* I really did not want to do a deep dive into all of that, so instead I wanted to explore the potential of 2021.

Charlie

First Deliberately Dope is welcoming a new member, my sister Charlie! Her addition is so organic. I don’t recall when, but sometime last year my sister was included in my morning phone calls with Latrice. Our conversations would cover everything from what is going on in our personal lives to hot topics. Charlie will cover two her passions – legacy and finical security. Secondly we are adding a podcast! “Saturday Morning Coffee is Dope”, just like our weekly blogs, we will be discussing hot topics and picking one of our post from the week and doing a deep dive. Needless to say, I am excited.

Currently I am listening to Barack Obama’s book, A Promised Land. This book is hella long! I am just past the half way point, but I still have 13 hours left. The book is good for people wanting a peek behind the curtain during his admiration and political nerds like me. I got teary eyed listening to him recalling the first time he heard the chant “Fire up and ready to go”. Just imagining how Ms. Edith S. Charles feels, hearing herself immortalized in a presidential biography.

I also got emotional listening to talk about the night he won the election in 2008, I couldn’t help but think about my personal story about that day. I had volunteered for an organization who would go through the lines at polling locations, answering questions while providing water and snacks. Later that night I went home in bed with my husband and holding my one year old. I just recall looking at my son, knowing he will never know a world where a Black man wasn’t President. My son is now 13 and we are in the process of welcoming a Black woman Vice President.

My next book will be be Year of Yes, by Shonda Rhimes. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not one to live my life on the edge. I stay on the side of “no”, I am just not adventurous at all. As a matter of fact, there is a running joke about how is that me, Charlie, and Latrice could be friends. One day will will take a trip that involve skydiving and I be the one filming safely on land. The older I get the worst I get, so as I am entering the end of my 40’s I am going make the effort to try new things and not be so up freaking uptight. I can’t wait to talk about this process and share my journey with you guys. I am ready to release many of fears and phobias.

Since I will be covering all things pop culture, I was reviewing new and up coming movies in 2021. I wasn’t too excited. But there are some titles that are finally being released that held my attention. Matrix 4 (I will believe when I actually see it), Spiral with Chris Rock and Samuel Jackson looks promising, Candyman… (On a complete side note. I do not do horror movies, but I know how good a really well written horror movie can be. The original Candyman, scared the shit out of me! I still can’t be in a dark room with a mirror, but this new iteration looks really good. I say that and I still haven’t seen IT. The long awaited Coming to America and Judas and the Black Messiah are a few of the movies I hope to review this year.

Last year I consumed so much content, so I am kind of burned out on television, but that was until I started watching Showtime’s Your Honor. I will defiantly summarizing that series, so check it out so we can discuss it at the end of the season. Snowfall might get a shout out every week starting in February. I just re-watched the first three seasons last week. I started with season three, in preparation for the new season coming in February, but then I had to go back to season one which lead to season two. Halfway into season one, my husband started watching so he got invested, now he is wrapping up season three.

I am also thinking about highlighting some YouTube channels. There a few channels that I have obsessed over during the pandemic. With all that said, 2021 has the potential to be great. See you next week!

I am a wife, mother of three, caseworker, graduate student, PTO President and oh yeah I have a social life AND I am on my weight lost journey. Many of my friends are amazed that I am able to provide a home cook meal at least 6 nights a week. Over the years I have developed my expertise and want to share them with people and hopefully get feedback on how I can improve.
